Abstract

This article argues against understanding Christ’s death as sacrifice. Using the work of Jay, Stowers, and others, it describes the work of sacrifice in establishing a male-dominated hierarchical social order and the marginalization of women. It then considers the uses of sacrifice in the Second Testament and the warning passages in Hebrews reflecting the logic of sacrifice. It concludes with a few observations on sacrifice today.
