Abstract

AbstractMany therapists today are using the sand tray as a dynamic tool in psychological understanding and healing with their clients. It is a powerful catalyst for inner change. This paper describes the origins of the sand tray and its uses and special benefits. The process of building a world in a sand tray offers the individual a safe space in which inner psychological states can be experienced, and the miniatures, animals and other objects become a living expression of self. Inner conflicts, trauma, current and core issues can be addressed, and often a connection to spirit or higher self can be made. Four case studies are presented to illustrate the power and healing that can be experienced over time when the sacred space of the sand tray is entered. Copyright © 2003 Whurr Publishers Ltd.
