Abstract

Sacral stress fractures are an unusual cause of low back and buttock pain. Initially described as an insufficiency fracture by Lourie [1] in 1982, they were first reported in healthy military recruits in 1989 by Volpin et al [2]. A rare complication of sacral stress fractures is neurologic compromise, more commonly involving the lower lumbar and upper sacral nerve roots. We describe a case of a healthy, middle-aged, female runner with symptoms of a lumbar polyradiculopathy diagnosed with a unilateral sacral ala fracture.
