Abstract

Refractory benign esophageal strictures (RBES) are difficult to treat and often require serial dilations or surgery. Placement of temporary fully-covered, self-expanding metal stents (FCSEMS) has shown moderate efficacy in improving dysphagia in patients with RBES. The recent development of biodegradable stents may provide another viable treatment option. Given the increasing number of therapeutic options, we performed a cost-minimization analysis to determine the optimal endoscopic and/or surgical management of RBES.
