Abstract

Case: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is currently believed to result from a combination of genetic susceptibility, environmental triggers, and gut dysbiosis, causing an abnormal mucosal immune response and compromised barrier function. Many viruses have also been thought to activate this immune dysregulation in autoimmune diseases, including IBD, and COVID-19 is likely no exception. We herein report a pediatric case of de Novo Crohn’s disease diagnosis following a symptomatic COVID-19 infection in a previously healthy 7-year-old female. We further outline her inpatient course, diagnostic testing results, and treatment outcomes. Although there have been few reported cases of IBD following COVID-19 infection, to our knowledge, none have yet been reported in a pediatric patient so young.
