Abstract

In head-stack assembly for Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), head-gimbal-assemblies are attached to E-block-arms by ball-swaging. After the ball-swaging process, mount-plates made to deform, and it decreases the fling stability and the reliability of load/unload. Therefore, the reduction of their deformations is strongly desired in HDD industry. In this paper, the analysis of bending deformation was carried out to understand the mechanism of the deformations by ball-swaging process. Also, the proper boss-hole diameter is discussed for the reduction of the HMB deformation.
