Abstract

Colonoscopy can be hard to perform and painful for the patient due to looping of the colonoscope. In an effort to address this problem, we developed the segmental stiffening wire (SSW), a flexible stainless steel wire with a 20 inch length of increased thickness and stiffness beginning 4.5 inches from the distal tip. If looping occurs, the loop can be reduced and the SSW inserted into the biopsy channel with the stiffened segment in the problem area. Our preliminary studies with fluoroscopy demonstrated that the SSW can prevent looping.
