Abstract

Introduction: The role of family support is one of the most important social relationships that can influence health behavior, especially for the college students in China, parents play a considerable role in health care decision-making, representing culture and religious beliefs, as well as providing financial support, emotional support, and mental health support. It also has a significant impact on facilitating health care of orthognathic patients in the orthognathic treatment procedure. This study aims to investigate whether orthognathic surgery will influence the family adaptability and cohesion for college students with maxillofacial deformities, and to explore whether it is necessary to make coping strategies for their families and to promote patients’ outcome and satisfaction. Methods: The scores of family adaptability and cohesion rates were evaluated by the Chinese version of the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales II (FACESII-CV) for 100 college students with maxillofacial deformities who visited Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital Affiliated Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medicine, 100 college students without maxillofacial deformities from Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Science. To compare their real and ideal family system respectively, as well as their family adaptability and cohesion respectively. Results: There was no significant correlation in family adaptability and cohesion between colleges students with and without maxillofacial deformities (P > 0.05). However, the results showed that there was an obvious difference between real and ideal family system for both college students with and without maxillofacial deformities (P <0.01). Conclusion: The examination demonstrated no difference in family adaptability and cohesion ratings between college students with and without maxillofacial deformities as measured by the FACESII-CV. However, both of college students with and without maxillofacial deformities were less satisfied about their family support. The results suggest to consider the family support of orthognathic college students before treatment. Furthermore, orthognathic treatment does not increase the dissatisfaction of the family adaptability and cohesion for college students with maxillofacial deformities.
