Abstract

One well-characterized cytokine-inhibiting mechanism, termed the inflammatory reflex, is dependent upon vagus nerve stimulation that inhibits cytokine production and attenuates inflammation. Low vagal tone was associated with increased IL-6 and TNF levels in mentally healthy adults. We attempted to assess the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) measures and peripheral inflammatory marker levels of euthymic bipolar patients.
