Abstract

In this paper, gamma distribution is used as the initial distribution of flaw size, and their parameters are estimated from the flaw size data reported previously. Based on extreme value statistics, an exact distribution of the largest flaw size is derived from the initial distribution of flaw size. This distribution is equal to the distribution of fracture origin size. Since the relation between the fracture origin size and the fracture strength is given by fracture mechanics, an exact distribution of fracture strength is derived from the distribution of the largest flaw size by variable transformation. From the fact that the number of links in the specimens is in the range from 10^4 to 10^6, the parameters of Weibull distribution are obtained from the parameters of the initial distribution of flaw size. Thus, a new estimation method of Weibull parameters is proposed here.
