Abstract

The new “in‐phrase” in production/quality control is “S.P.C.” or Statistical Process Control. This is the application of statistical prediction techniques to the process producing the products. Such techniques depend upon the rapid collection and evaluation of measurements made upon representative sample batches taken from production. In order for the prediction and subsequent control to be accurate and reliable, it is necessary to correctly evaluate as large an amount of process — representative data as is practically possible. Where coated products are being produced, coating thickness data is of prime importance and, therefore, modern coating thickness computers, even the small hand‐held models, are equipped with facilities for storing and evaluating large amounts of thickness data.
