Abstract

ABSTRACT This article examines 1990s lesbian-queer San Francisco as told through the porn archive of S.I.R. Video and its founders, Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano. The creative masterminds behind the groundbreaking sex education series Bend Over Boyfriend and hardcore dyke features Hard Love and How to Fuck in High Heels and Sugar High Glitter City, the duo drew their inspiration from the various sex-positive and queer communities they inhabited: the radical dyke culture popularized by On Our Backs, lesbian sex clubs, queer performance art, and more. Often shot on location in lesbian bars and sex shops, mural-filled alleyways and artist lofts, their films document a cityscape on the cusp of a rapid and radical transformation, one driven by the rise of the internet and the first dot-com boom and subsequent bust. In doing so, they capture an era in which queer working-class creatives could afford to make experimental art and porn with the knowledge that even if their projects failed financially, they could still survive in the city they loved.
