Abstract

Over the past 75 years the contribution of nurses to hypertension has evolved and expanded continually. First mainly involved in blood pressure monitoring, the role of nurses as educator has become a key component of blood pressure control. Today nurses and nurse practitioners are involved in all aspects of hypertension care from detection, prevention, diagnosis, management to follow up. They are involved in management of hypertension clinics and public health strategies development and implementation. At the heart of their practice remains the idea that patient-centered care through patient education, counseling will empower them into playing an even larger part into their care. The conference presented will highlight the different roles throughout time. highlighting research results demonstrating the efficacy and necessity to move forward towards a model of care into which nurses and nurse practitioners are pivotal.
