Abstract

Several cross-sectional studies have shown the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic kidney disease. Recently, we investigated the prospective association of OSA with incident CKD using data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study (J Am Soc Nephrol. 2020;8:1859–1869). In this study, we observed a modest association of OSA with incident CKD, but this association was attenuated once accounting for adiposity or other potential confounders. In this presentation, I will present key results from that ARIC study and other relevant studies and discuss the etiological association between OSA and CKD.
