Abstract

We study the Kronig-Penney one dimensional crystal terminated by a classical cut-off image potential. We show that surface states can exist in that potential. Particularly when a band gap is located at the vacuum level, these surface states form a Rydberg series converging toward this level. The long range of the image potential rather than type of termination (symmetric or asymmetric) determines the behaviour of these states. The relationship between these states and electronic surfaces resonances encountered in LEED is also given.
