Abstract

Using 10.5 eV photoionization and time-of-flight mass analysis of the dissociation products of CH 3(B 2A′ 1) in a free jet, we have observed the photochemical production of CH 2. This application of pulsed supersonic jet flash pyrolysis takes advantage of the nearly quantitative radical yield in the nozzle source to eliminate interference from other molecular species that could obscure the predicted methyl radical photochemistry.
