Abstract

Abstract The second chapter provides a historical background of Rwanda. This chapter argues that in order to understand the emergence, evolution, enforcement, and responses to the current master narrative of the genocide, it is important to locate present-day tensions into a longue durée analysis of previous master narratives in Rwanda and how they relate to power, violence, and marginalization. It focuses on the role of master narratives in governance and legitimacy and examines how previous master narratives evolved into hegemonic narratives, as well as how these hegemonic narratives sometimes became dissident narratives through political developments. The chapter highlights the fluidity with which narratives have evolved from marginalization to dominance and then back again.
