Abstract

In the Netherlands for several years and to an increasing degree a serious disease in the apple varieties Belle de Boskoop and Glorie van Holland has been observed. Rough brown patches, stripes and in some cases rings develop on the skin of the fruits. Sometimes large parts of the skin are roughened and browned. In only a single case were these patches cracked. The fruits remain small and are sorted into the lowest commercial grades. The disease, which is referred to asrough skin, has been found only in older trees. Spread occurs in the crown and the number of infected trees in the orchards increases during a period of several years.
