Abstract

ABSTRACT Ruth Shonle Cavan (1896-1993) received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 1926. She established a national reputation for her teaching, scholarship, and professional service in sociology of the family, criminology, delinquency, and historical communes. This paper notes the awards and honors she received for her accomplishments. The paper further reviews her life beginning with her childhood days in Tuscola, Illinois through her college days at Millikin University and the University of Chicago and her professorships at Rockford College and Northern Illinois University seeking explanations for her innovative and creative analytical skills and the intriguing ideas found in her publications.
