Abstract

In Western political rhetoric, a definite, unequivocal position is constantly demonstrated on the role of Russia in the post-Soviet space. It seems significant and important to show the Russian point of view regarding the vision of the role of the Russian Federation, in particular with respect to the self-proclaimed states of the South Caucasus. Undoubtedly, an interesting fact for the study will also be a view from the inside: How is the existing relationship with Russia and its role in shaping the political and socio-economic reality evaluated in these states? In this vein, states that have received recognition of their independence from the Russian Federation – South Ossetia and Abkhazia – can be a very interesting example. Nagorno-Karabakh, being in the stage of unfinished frozen conflict, is also an object for investigation. The main motive of the actions on the Russian side in these areas is to take care of the interests of the people of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Nagorno-Karabakh. During the years of protracted conflicts, the inhabitants of these republics were actually deprived of the opportunity to realize the universal rights to a decent life and sustainable development. It should be particularly noted that actions regarding Abkhazia and South Ossetia do not mean that Russia made a choice in favor of confrontation with Georgia. The Russian Federation is interested in the socio-economic development of the region. This is confirmed by the resumption of air and sea links with Georgia, other steps that constitute a positive alternative to the current Georgian leadership’s course. In the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with the Russian Federation, mediating efforts are being made to resolve it. The long-term efforts of Moscow and the OSCE Minsk Group to resolve this conflict are primarily aimed at ensuring the negotiation process between the conflicting parties, as well as preventing hostilities and reducing tension in the conflict zone. The implementation of all these measures will contribute to strengthening security and stability in the South Caucasus region.
