Abstract

Significance Putin and Xi have already met at a June 23-24 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Uzbekistan.The size of Putin's delegation underscores the importance assigned to China, which has grown since Russia's relationship with the West was damaged by sanctions imposed for its actions in Ukraine. Impacts Shared positions on international affairs will facilitate economic engagement. Larger projects will be used as showcases for the high-level bilateral relationship. As Chinese growth slows, the need for Russian manufactured goods will decline. China's 'Silk Road' trade routes will offer Central Asian states commercial alternatives to Russia.
