Abstract

For Russia, the DPRK is a very near neighbor founded by the Soviet Union. Hopes for economic cooperation center on triangular projects, which Kim Jong-il supported in August 2011, stimulating increased trust. Supporters of great power nationalism, who see an unending battle from the Cold War, believe, since Russia cannot by itself compete, that all enemies of the West should unite. North Korea is one of the most important Asian links and its nuclear weapons are in Russia’s interest. Another group lays blame for the crisis on the DPRK but also on its opponents. Since the DPRK is hardly likely in the near future to disappear, Russia needs to have normal relations with it, gradually luring it into international cooperation. Russia calls for Six-Party Talks for security in Northeast Asia in which it could play the leading role.
