Abstract

In July 2012 – the WTO announced that Russia had ratified legislations clearing the country’s path to become the 156th member of the club of trading nations on August 22, 2012. Russia’s entry into the WTO had been a long and arduous journey that traversed cold war trade legislations legacies such as Jackson-Vanik Agreement, former Soviet state threat of veto, gas supply to Europe, intellectual property rights, among a host of others. Though in retrospect, the accession talks has been unfair to the Russian Federation – it is nevertheless a welcome relief that the world’s largest country is now a member in the club of nations and will effectively shape the current trends in international law in the post war era of 1945.
