Abstract

• GIs can be an alternative means of revitalising rural regions. • A small volume of production, the reproduction of territorial quality and the horizontal relations in decision-making dictate the effectiveness and the redistributive potential of GI projects in a positive way. • GIs can sustain rural revitalization only through strong collective action that challenges the continual pressure of economies of scale . • Legal food production standards should be redefined and restructured in such a way that rural actors are able to preserve and improve their traditional mode of production.
