Abstract

ily concentrated in a few coastal cities, almost everybody in southern Italy is directly or indirectly employed in farming. It is, however, difficult to classify southern Italian agricultural labor. Because of a considerably larger supply than demand for agricultural labor, all categories are similar in their aspirations. All are in continuous search of one day of work, one acre to be cultivated in any quality (sharecroppers, tenancy workers, etc.) or for both.
