Abstract

This volume is part of a collection of 4 volumes on Rural Economy and Society in North-Western Europe, 500-2000. The book , Social Relations, Property and Power ,aims at a synthesis of our knowledge about rural societies, presented in one chapter for each country. It looks at the vital questions: who owned the land? Who gained the profits from its exploitation? The changes inside rural societies all through centuries came from the tension and negotiation between lords and peasants, and the growing importance of the state and its policies. The book also looks at external changes such as the rise and fall of the market, the European integration.
