Abstract

AbstractThis chapter sets the overall context of the book. It briefly describes India’s rural domestic water supply situation. It discusses the technological, institutional, and policy reforms undertaken in the country’s rural water supply sector since independence and tracks the progress made by various Indian states in terms of improving the coverage, reliability, adequacy, and quality of water supply in rural areas in the light of these changes. It also briefly discusses the new challenges facing the sector, from the points of view of physical sustainability of the services, equity in access to supplies and financial sustainability.
