Abstract

The article is based on research study carried out in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. The study was conducted to get an idea about the economic status of self help groups (SHGs), as the SHG members, mostly belonging to poor segments of the society in West Bengal, were assisted under SGSY by extending loan and subsidy. On the other hand, in Tamil Nadu the SHGs were assisted only by extending loan through the bank under the guidance of MYRADA. The article presents four innovative cases – two from West Bengal and two from Tamil Nadu which reveal how, by availing of financial assistance in small quantity, the economic condition of the BPL families was improved. For early reference, the salient features of SGSY have also been included here.
