Abstract

As a White woman, I explore my commitment to allyship and solidarity with my Asian colleagues by sharing my own story of coming to appreciate Chinese perspectives on art education, immigration, heritage, and poetry. Aligning with Asian critical theory, I foreground the work of Jun Hu from Hangzhou Normal University, who has re-interpreted a/r/tography from a uniquely Chinese perspective. Embracing classical Chinese poetry as a complement to visual inquiry, Hu implemented an innovative Silk Road field trip in which students investigated historical or cultural concepts, images, and ideas through a uniquely Chinese a/r/tographic protocol. I offer six of my own visual and poetic couplets to share my embodied aesthetic experience of the Silk Road field trip. These and other experiences offered me insights to share with Canadian students studying a/r/tography, as we examine how Asian philosophy and practices may impact our reimagination of research methodologies and pedagogies.
