Abstract

When two Chinese syllables are uttered sequentially, the tone of each syllable has its own pitch and contour. Two adjacent tones in spontaneous speech must overcome the contradictions in pitch and contour in order to form a tonally smooth unit, and there must be some rules governing the process. Taking the tonal pattern of two-syllable words in Beijing Mandarin as the object of study and based on analyses of experimental phonetics, this paper reveals three rules in connecting two tones in actual speech, namely connection at the same pitch level, connection with pitch adjustment, and connection with highlighting.
