Abstract

This chapter highlights that the IEA greenhouse gas R&D program has undertaken an exercise to identify the key barriers to the implementation of CO2 capture and storage. One key barrier identified was a lack of rules and standards for CO2 capture and storage. To address this barrier IEA GHG has reviewed information on available standards for CO2 capture and storage worldwide. This chapter shows that for CO2 transmission by pipeline, there are currently standards in place that cover the necessary issues regarding the transportation of CO2. In contrast, it was found that there were very few applicable existing standards relating to CO2 storage. The review, therefore, clearly identified that there was a need for guidelines to be developed in the area of geological storage of CO2. It also presents the details of a set of draft guidelines for CO2 storage in geological reservoirs that aim to start a debate on the way forward in developing international guidelines.
