Abstract

The Old Testament phrase «a land flowing with milk and honey » does not refer to the natural richness of Palestine nor does it represent merely a metaphor of fertility. Analysis of the saying’s syntax, semantics and function, as well as comparison with a similar motif in the Ugaritic Baal Cycle, point to the vision of a cultivated and irrigated land of meadows and fruit-bearing trees. This idea focuses primarily on Yahweh’s chosen people to whom this land has been promised, and secondarily on the whole body of Adam’s descendants who share the vision that paradise is not lost.
