Abstract

FIG. 2. Photomicrograph of porcupine Sarcoptes scabei. ectoparasites for this species. The following description is presented in the belief that it is the first record of Sarcoptes scabei infestation of the porcupine. On November 2, 1957, a porcupine in moribund condition was brought to the laboratory by William Peppard, a State of Maine Regional Wildlife Biologist. The animal was killed, and the gross lesions were as follows: There was a yellow-white encrustation around the mouth, on the legs, and over most of the ventral surface of the body. This encrustation was as much as %-inch thick in some areas and was held to the surface of the body by entangled hairs. At the joints of the legs and on the abdominal surface (visible in Fig. 1), there were large cracks in the skin, exposing the subcutaneous tissue.
