Abstract

Optimization of time overhead of packet transmission is an important issue for wireless LAN due to limited energy of wireless nodes. This paper attempts to achieve the time overhead of packet transmission in RTS and basic access modes by analyzing the transmitting procedure of MAC frames in IEEE 802.11 DCF. On the basis of minimizing the time overhead in packet transmitting, formulas to calculate the optimal RTS threshold are provided. An adaptive RTS threshold adjustment algorithm is also presented to enable wireless nodes to achieve the optimal RTS threshold based on the estimation of successful transmitting probability of packets. Simulations show that the adaptive RTS threshold adjustment algorithm can greatly decrease the time overhead in MAC frames transmission, and enhance the transmission efficiency of 802.11 DCF
