Abstract

In order to coordinate the use of robotic and remotely operated telescopes in networks – like Göttingen's MOnitoring NEtwork of Telescopes (MONET) – a standard format for the exchange of observing requests and reports is needed. I describe the benefits of Remote Telescope Markup Language (RTML), an XML-based protocol originally devel-oped by the Hands-On Universe Project, which is being used and further developed by several robotic telescope projects and firms.
