Abstract

After elimination of uromucoid ( tamm And horsfall) and concentration by ultrafiltration, the following electrophoretic types of urinary colloids may be obtained: 1. Type I: Gross renal permeability; nephrotic syndrome. Important proteinuria with preponderance of albumin and α 1- and β-globulins. The latter may be identified as orosomucoid, at pH 4.7. Donaggio's reaction is positive and due to orosomucoid. 2. Type II: Slight renal permeability; for instance congestive heart failure. Minimal proteinuria, qualitatively identical with Type I. Donaggio's reaction negative. 3. Type III: Mucoproteinuria; any febrile condition, infections, traumas, acute collagenoses, tissue necroses. Slight proteinuria, especially of α 1-globulin, identifiable with orosomucoid by electrophoresis at pH 4.7. Moreover, excretion of an acid mucopolysaccharide (chrondroitin sulphate) identifiable by alcian blue and methylene blue. Donaggio's reaction is very positive and mainly due to this acid mucopolysaccharide, less to orosomucoid.
