Abstract
The case study considered in this article revolves around the figure of Diego Nunes Pereira, a Portuguese New Christian tax farmer who decides to flee Lisbon in 1703 with his six children, as the threat of Inquisition draws nearer, and to settle in Bordeaux. After focusing on the circumstances of his departure, the article follows a decade long series of legal procedure, undertaken in Lisbon, but also in localities where he owns merchandise, money and has correspondents, Marseille and La Rochelle, which he fends from Bordeaux. Among the questions raised in the series of procedures that end up in jurisdictional conflicts all the way up to the Conseil privé, the most important one is to decide whether he should be considered a foreigner or not, at a time when Jews have no legal standing yet, even in Bordeaux.
