Abstract

The retained austenite is important problem in heat treatment of high carbon or high carbon low alloy steels. This problem can eliminated by different ways in industrial applications. In this study, high carbon (∼2%C) low alloy steel specimens were hardened using oil and air from different temperatures (960 and 1060°C). A group of these specimens were tempered directly, and others after cold treatment at -80°C. The wear tests were performed on all these specimens. It was concluded that there are no important difference between the wear rates of both groups. The wear rates of these specimens are not dependent on prior austenite ratio.
