Abstract

Republicanism and liberalism : opposition or complementarity ? The issue of political freedom Taking the crucial example of political freedom, the author attempts to demonstrate that the opposition between liberal and republican conceptions of citizenship are only valid for one facet of citizenship – civic humanism. On the other hand, not only can political republicanism be reconciled with liberalism, but it also constitutes an enrichment thereof. This argument would be undermined if the claim of the specificity of the republican theory of freedom as non-domination was founded. But this claim can be contested. Political republicanism must therefore be considered as a strict version of liberalism, addressed to those for whom the emancipation of dominated peoples represents a central requirement.
