Abstract

In a paper recently published in the Journal of Surgical Research, Holscher et al. discuss the value of obtaining a routine chest computed tomography (CT) scan for evaluation of children with blunt trauma [1]. In a retrospective review of their pediatric trauma patients, the authors found that all thoracic critical conditions, requiring urgent interventions, were identifiable by chest x-rays in patients who had chest CT scans as part of their work-up. And since chest CT scans are associated with an increased risk of radiation exposure, the authors recommend selective use of chest CT scans in children.
