Abstract
A method for absolute alpha and beta counting of samples mounted on metal foil in a 4 π proportional counter is described. Mathematical expressions are presented for determining the 4 π disintegration rate, backscattering contribution and absorption factors for forward and scattered radiation. Useful scattering and absorption data are obtained, and because of the ease of the technique, samples can be counted on a routine basis.
