Abstract Rout, P. K., Pani, P. K. and Naithani, S. 1993. Rous sarcoma virus (subgroup A) induced tumourigenesis in visceral organs of avian species. J. Appl. Anim. Res., 3: 11–18. An investigation was conducted using four avian species (indigenous chicken, Bantam, quail and guinea fowl) to ascertain Rous sarcoma virus (Subgroup A)-induced tumour expression in animals that had been inoculated as embryos into the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). It was observed that as little as one virus particle could induce liver tumour (LT) death of chicks. The guinea fowl invariably and equally developed tumours in liver and spleen but did not express tumours in heart in contrast to chickens. The degree of CAM infection was not linearly related to LT deaths in all avian species as even chicks from the group with a zero pock count, had expressed LT incidence. The quail and Bantam embryos were observed to be more sensitive than the chick dying early after inoculation with the same dose of virus.
