Abstract

We present a study of prism-coupled light emission from AlAlOxAu tunnel junctions fabricated on optically flat substrates. By comparing the radiation directly emitted from the “fast” surface plasmon localised at the outer Au surface with that coupled out by intrinsic roughness, we are able to conclude that most of the roughness-coupled emission is derived from this “fast” mode, and not from the “slow” plasmon mode localised in the oxide barrier region nor from the other “fast” plasmon mode localised at the substrate-Al interface.
