Abstract

Magnetic-field-induced circular dichroism of the ν 4 mode of methane at 0.5 cm −1 resolution is reported. For the first five members of the R branch, A 1/ D 0 is approximately constant, averaging −4.8 × 10 −4, which corresponds to an average g J of + 0.44. This agrees in sign with and is ≈ 40% higher than the magnetic resonance results for the ground state of methane. The difference may be due to experimental error or to vibrational magnetic moment contributions. The consistency of g J implies that the MVCD depends primarily on the change in M J in each transition.
