Abstract

Drift tearing modes have a threshold Δ′ for instability, which is increased by sheared poloidal rotation. Sheared rotation becomes important for v′θ≥ω*. The critical Δ′ is approximately linear in ‖v′θ‖. The linear stability of tearing modes is relevant to tokamak edge conditions at the L- to H-mode transition.
