Abstract

A microscopic collective hamiltonian is diagonalized in a shell model basis and applied to the nuclei 126Ba, 154Sm, 164Yb and 166Er. Rotational bands of states are obtained with the correct deformations, B(E2) values and moments of inertia. The latter is particularly remarkable since the kinetic energy used is the elementary many-nucleon kinetic energy. The approach, based on the sp(3, R) and sp(1, R) models, thus represents a very desirable unification of the nuclear collective and shell models.
