Abstract

ABSTRACT Plain rebar-induced failure mechanisms in reinforced concrete columns shed new light on seismic assessment and risk mitigation strategies of historical reinforced concrete structures. However, the assessment provisions have not been evaluated and compared for RC columns reinforced with plain rebars on probability of failure scale. Thus, a database of 81 rectangular RC columns was constituted in which the yield and plastic rotations were revealed strongly dependent on shear span to depth ratio and axial load, respectively. All code provisions related to plastic rotation estimations were adjusted to 15%of failure probability while abiding by the code characteristics.
