Abstract

A simple experiment is described where a metal ring was spun by hand in a vertical plane on a horizontal rod. The ring rotated about one hundred times before it fell onto the rod. The physics of the problem involves rotation of the ring in a circular path around the rod, plus rotation of the ring at a lower frequency about its own axis. It is a slightly more challenging problem than the standard loop-the-loop demonstration.
