Abstract

In the Handbook of Distance Education (2003), Susan McKnight provided a chapter that was entitled, “Distance Education and the Role of Academic Libraries.” McKnight’s chapter was a good summary of the state of library services for distance education at the opening of the Twenty-First Century, emphasizing the particular circumstances of library services and resources available through Australian academic institutions. This chapter will expand upon many of the subjects that McKnight discussed, while emphasizing library matters related to distance education in the United States and other nations. For librarians new to the field and others who are interested in the subject, this chapter should serve as a good introduction to recent trends in distance education librarianship, especially in North America.
