Abstract

This paper presents a study on root stresses of internal helical gear teeth in mesh. The deflection and root stress of internal gear tooth due to a concentrated load were calculated by the three-dimensional finite-element method (FEM). On the basis of these calculated results, approximate equations for the influence function of the tooth deflection and the bending moment factor on the critical section of the gear tooth were derived. The calculation method of root stresses of internal helical gear teeth in mesh, in which these approximate equations were used, was given. The root stresses of internal helical gear teeth in mesh were calculated by this method and measured by the strain gage method, and the validity of the calculation method was confirmed by comparing the calculated root stresses with measured ones.
